The Vice-Chancellor of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Professor Ozo- Mekuri Ndimele has reiterated that the newly established graduate school of the institution would graduate students who are serious with their studies in one year without compromising quality education.
He gave this assurance when members of Progressive Committee of Friends, Rivers State, visited him on Tuesday.
The Vice-Chancellor, who informed the group that the university has introduced new courses in order to create more academic opportunities to Rivers indigenes, emphasized the need for students to acquire useful skills while in school to complement their degrees.
He disclosed that the institution has introduced compulsory certificate programmes in useful skills to enhance the competitiveness and employability of its graduates, as well as other programmes that would put skills in the hands of Rivers people.
The number of graduates who pass out from tertiary institutions in Nigeria, he said, is threatening when compared to the depreciating number of job vacancies.
He noted that when youths engage in such profitable skills, it would curb restiveness and social vices in the society, adding that as a university, it has a responsibility to impact positively on the people of the area where it is established.
He lauded the group for the visit, and assured that the university would do more to advance the fortunes of Rivers State in whatever positive way it could.
Earlier, the President of the group, Mr Eze Nwagor, had disclosed that they were in the school to commend the Vice-Chancellor on the landmark achievements he has recorded within his stay; which include the establishment of a graduate school, introduction of new programmes, infrastructural facelift, and the construction of hostel blocks, among others.
Mr Nwagor noted that the appointment of the V-C was not a surprise to the group because of the outstanding academic contributions he has made in the state and the nation, adding that the group was happy to be identified with him as one of its patron.
He disclosed that the Progressive Committee of Friends was formed to foster unity and co-existence among the different ethnic groups in the state and provides a forum to discuss the welfare of its members, the state and the nation at large.
The body also informed the V-C of the planned induction of its patrons in the first quarter of next year.
